Verstappen vs Hamilton On The Front Row Again — Imagine That! — And Mercedes Have No Idea What Just Happened
Max Verstappen grabbed Red Bull's first pole of 2026 in Malaysia, Lewis Hamilton lines up alongside him, and Mercedes' big upgrade went backwards. Here's the grid drama ahead of Sunday's race.
Stop scrolling, because Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton are sharing the front row of a Grand Prix for the first time since 2023 — and yes, the 2021 flashbacks are already hitting.
The Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia (yes, really, more on that below) just got a very spicy Sunday setup.
The Tea ☕
- Verstappen took Red Bull's first pole of 2026, topping all three qualifying sessions, per BBC Sport.
- Hamilton's Ferrari is second, 0.298s back, after what he called "probably my best lap of the year."
- Mercedes brought a huge upgrade and... went backwards.
Pole Position, Finally
Verstappen's last pole and win came at the Abu Dhabi finale last season, so this has been a long wait. Sky Sports says it's his 49th career pole.
His take: "We have been trying many grands prix to get pole... to finally get it, from where we started the season, pretty incredible."
BBC Sport reports Red Bull's aerodynamic upgrade from Azerbaijan has been a major step forward at Sepang, after a difficult year for Verstappen.
"What Could Possibly Go Wrong..."
Sky's Martin Brundle summed up the vibe perfectly: "Verstappen versus Hamilton. Imagine that! What could possibly go wrong..."
BBC notes the front row revives memories of their bitter 2021 title fight, when Hamilton was still at Mercedes. Sky adds it's the first time these two have started at the head of a GP together since Hungary 2023. The first corner could be appetizing.
Hamilton was cautious, though. He says Ferrari carry a straight-line speed deficit, so he'll have to be careful not to chew through his tyres trying to keep up. Still, he said that if he can stay in the fight, "that'd be awesome."
Mercedes, Are You Okay?
Mercedes arrived as big favourites, having won the last three races and bringing their first major upgrade since Canada. Instead, Sky Sports' report has Toto Wolff admitting confusion over the package.
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli had a track-limits lap deleted in Q2, which left him with just one fresh set of softs for the final shootout. He'll start third once Red Bull's Isack Hadjar (third fastest) takes a five-place grid penalty. Antonelli admitted Verstappen "was too quick today" anyway.
His team-mate George Russell qualified eighth, 0.240s behind him, and said of the tyres: "For whatever reason, it seems to be affecting us far more than others." He'll start seventh after Hadjar's penalty.
Meanwhile, Elsewhere On The Grid
- Alonso put Aston Martin 12th, their best qualifying since the summer break, days after confirming he's staying in F1 for 2027.
- McLaren were never in the pole fight, with Norris 0.627s off.
- Everything's happening in Malaysia, which last hosted a GP in 2017. Per BBC, this race was moved to Sepang after being postponed because of the war in the Middle East, and fans turned out in huge numbers.
Lights out is Sunday at 8am UK time.
