The Prime Minister has said the government believes Iran played a part in the incident near RAF Fairford, the US-operated airbase in Gloucestershire. Iran denies it. Here is where things stand.

What The PM Said

Andy Burnham told the BBC: "We will say more in due course but we can confirm... that we believe Iran to have played a part," BBC News reports. He gave no further details.

Sky News describes it as a "strong indication" of Iranian involvement in an alleged terror plot. The Iranian embassy in London has said it "categorically rejects and strongly condemns" what it calls "unfounded and malicious speculations", according to the BBC.

So far, the government has offered no public evidence. Burnham said more would be said later.

What Happened On Sunday

Police received a call at 00:45 BST on Sunday about "three suspicious vehicles" heading towards the base, BBC News reports. The vans were found in Whelford, a village just east of the airbase.

A 400m cordon was set up and a bomb disposal team was sent in. Five men were arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. They are UK nationals aged 23 to 25, four from Westminster and one from Camden.

Counter Terrorism Policing said searches of the vans found a quantity of petrol but no explosive devices.

The Twist: One Of The Men Called 999

The BBC reports that one of the five men dialled 999 himself before the group was arrested. Nothing has been made public about why, and it is not clear what it means for the investigation.

Why Were They Bailed?

The five were released on bail in what police called an "investigative decision" that was "grounded in experience and strategy".

US President Donald Trump questioned it on Monday: "I would have said, 'don't let them have bail'." Burnham responded that "released" does not mean what people might assume, insisting the men are under the "strictest possible bail conditions" and that authorities have it "under the strongest grip and closest control".

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Monday the incident "clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor", citing Iran as an example of a country that has openly threatened American interests.

Why This Base Matters

RAF Fairford has been used by the US Air Force for decades. According to the BBC, US bombers have recently flown from it towards the Middle East, after the UK approved a US request to use it for what it called defensive strikes on Iran. In July, Iran said any base used for aggression against its territory was a "legitimate target".

Villagers Say They Were Left In The Dark

Around 85 homes were evacuated in the middle of the night. One couple told the BBC their child was traumatised after armed police pointed a gun at the father during the evacuation. The BBC has approached Counter Terrorism Policing for comment.

Another Whelford resident said locals felt like "sitting ducks" because they received no information beforehand, though she praised officers as "calm, thorough and precise".

Gloucestershire's temporary chief constable, Maggie Blyth, said some information cannot be shared during a live investigation, and promised information points in the area. The cordon was lifted on Wednesday afternoon.

What Happens Next

  • The government says it will reveal more about Iran's alleged role "in due course".
  • The police investigation is still live, and the five men remain on bail.
  • Questions remain over the 999 call and the decision to bail the suspects.

Do you think the government should share more now, or is keeping details back the right call while the investigation continues? Tell us in the comments.
