From Rocky Horror To Hollywood Royalty
If you don't know Tim Curry, you've been living under a rock β or you're about to have your MIND BLOWN going through his filmography.
The man was a chameleon. He shot to stardom playing the "sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania" Dr. Frank-N-Furter in 1975's The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a role he originated on stage in London. While critics initially ignored the film, it became a cultural phenomenon in the midnight movie circuit β and Tim's performance in that corset and fishnets became absolutely ICONIC.
But he was so much more than one role, no matter how legendary. According to Variety, he terrified an entire generation as Pennywise in the 1990 TV adaptation of Stephen King's It. He played the snooty concierge Mr. Hector in Home Alone 2. He was Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island. He appeared in Clue, Annie, The Hunt for Red October, and Scary Movie 2.
And his voice work? Chef's kiss. He won a Daytime Emmy for voicing Captain Hook in Peter Pan and the Pirates, and lent his incredible voice to everything from The Rugrats Movie to FernGully.
The Health Struggles That Changed Everything
Here's where it gets heartbreaking. In 2012, Tim suffered a massive stroke that required emergency brain surgery and left him partially paralyzed and in a wheelchair.
Page Six reports that in his 2025 memoir Vagabond, Tim revealed he was having a massage when the stroke happened. His massage therapist literally saved his life by ignoring his protests and calling 911.
During the surgery, part of his skull was removed and implanted in his abdomen to keep his brain β and him β alive. Yes, really.
"Being unable to string together and clearly deliver a sentence was absolute misery for somebody who values words and conversation as much as I do," he wrote in the book.
He Never Stopped Performing
Even after the stroke confined him to a wheelchair, Tim never gave up on what he loved. He shifted to voice work, which became his primary gig in later years.
In 2016, he appeared as the narrator in the TV remake The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let's Do the Time Warp Again (with Laverne Cox playing Frank-N-Furter). In 2020, he played Frank N. Furter again in a live table reading for Joe Biden's presidential campaign fundraiser.
And at a 50th anniversary Rocky Horror screening in LA in September 2025, he told the audience with characteristic honesty: "I still can't walk. I won't be singing and I won't be dancing very soon. I still have real problems with my left leg."
A Legacy That Can't Be Matched
Born April 19, 1946, in Grappenhall, Cheshire, Tim graduated from the University of Birmingham with degrees in English and drama. He started his professional career in the London production of Hair in 1968, and the rest is history.
Over his five-decade career, he earned three Tony nominations, an Olivier Award nod, and that Daytime Emmy β plus the eternal love of fans who quote his lines, recreate his performances, and keep Rocky Horror midnight screenings alive to this day.
According to Variety, Roger Ebert once wrote that Curry "bears a certain resemblance to Loretta Young in drag. He's the best thing in the movie, maybe because he seems to be having the most fun."
And wasn't that always the vibe? Tim Curry looked like he was having an ABSOLUTE BLAST in every single role, whether he was playing a villain, a hero, or something gloriously in between.
The Internet Is Devastated
Social media is already flooded with tributes, GIFs, and people sharing their favorite Tim Curry moments. From his wicked cackle as Pennywise to his sultry strut in fishnets, the man gave us EVERYTHING.
One fan put it perfectly: "Tim Curry was never afraid to be too much. He WAS too much β in the best possible way."
We are absolutely not okay right now. π
