The Voice Of Optimus Prime Just Died At 85 β And The Tributes Are Making Us UGLY CRY π
Peter Cullen, the legendary voice actor behind Transformers' Optimus Prime AND Winnie the Pooh's Eeyore, passed away peacefully at his LA home on Wednesday. Yes, really. The same voice that made us believe in heroic Autobots also brought us everyone's favorite sad donkey. We're not okay.
Stop everything you're doing, because we just lost an absolute legend β and if you grew up in the '80s (or literally any time since), you're about to feel ALL the feelings.
Peter Cullen, the iconic voice behind Optimus Prime in Transformers, died Wednesday at his Los Angeles home at the age of 85.
The news was confirmed by his agent Kevin Motley, and honestly? We need a minute.
The Voice That Defined A Generation
Here's the thing about Peter Cullen: his voice didn't just bring characters to life β it shaped entire childhoods. According to TMZ, Peter passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. The cause of death hasn't been disclosed.
His family released a statement that's hitting us right in the feels: "Peter Cullen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family β and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide. His family asks that you honor his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity, and loyalty and always remember 'be strong enough to be gentle.'"
BE STRONG ENOUGH TO BE GENTLE. We're crying, you're crying, everyone's crying.
From Autobots To... Eeyore?!
Wait until you hear this part, because it's the wildest range ever: Peter voiced both the heroic leader Optimus Prime AND the perpetually depressed donkey Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh. Yes, really. The SAME voice actor.
Variety reports that Peter originated Optimus Prime's deep, authoritative voice in the 1980s animated series The Transformers, then came back to the role two decades later for Michael Bay's 2007 live-action film. He continued voicing the Autobots leader through FIVE sequels, the Bumblebee spinoff, and multiple animated shows.
Two of those movies β Dark of the Moon and Age of Extinction β each grossed over $1.1 BILLION worldwide. That's the power of his voice.
The Tea β
Here's what you need to know:
- Peter Cullen died Wednesday, August 26, at his LA home surrounded by family
- He voiced Optimus Prime across 40+ years, from the '80s cartoon to the Michael Bay blockbusters
- He was ALSO Eeyore in various Winnie the Pooh projects (our minds are blown)
- His Optimus Prime voice was inspired by his brother Larry, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran
The Sweetest Inspiration
According to Deadline, Peter said his Optimus Prime voice was directly inspired by his brother Larry, who served in the Vietnam War.
"It was his tone of voice and delivery as a leader, his control that impressed me, and I applied my brother's attitude to life to Optimus Prime," Peter told Reading Eagle back in 2008. "There's a calmness to Optimus Prime, and yet a gentility and strength and honor and dignity, that are synonymous with the Marines."
And that's why Optimus Prime felt like more than just a cartoon character β because the voice came from a place of real heroism and respect.
A Career For The Ages
Peter's rΓ©sumΓ© is INSANE. Over 200 credits across 60+ years, including The Smurfs, DuckTales, Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Ghostbusters, G.I. Joe, the 1987 Predator film (he made those clicking sounds!), and even the villainous KARR in Knight Rider.
Born in Montreal on July 28, 1941, Peter graduated from the National Theatre School of Canada in 1963. He got his big break as an announcer on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in the late '60s, then became a regular on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour in the early '70s.
But it's his voice work that made him immortal.
The Internet Is NOT Okay
Fans are already flooding social media with tributes, and they're DEVASTATING. One commenter on Deadline's story wrote: "Wow, the voice of my childhood. This hits hard. Especially given the 40th anniversary of the Transformers animated film is only a few weeks away."
Another simply posted: "'Autobots, roll out!' RIP"
We're not crying, YOU'RE crying. (Okay fine, we're all crying.)
Peter is survived by his four children: Angus, Claire, Pilar and Clay.
Rest in peace to a legend who taught us that heroes can be strong AND gentle. π
