Stop everything, because the Williams sisters are BACK on court together β€” and we are absolutely not okay. 😭

Serena and Venus Williams just played their first doubles match in four years at the Cincinnati Open, and even though they lost in a nail-biting tie-break, the whole thing was pure magic from start to finish.

According to Sky Sports, the legendary duo were beaten 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 by Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk and American Peyton Stearns in the opening round on Monday β€” but not before staging one of the most dramatic comebacks we've seen all year.

The Tea β˜•

  • Serena (44!) and Venus (46!) played their first doubles match together since the 2022 US Open
  • They lost 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 in a tie-break thriller after being down 6-0 in the decider
  • Both sisters said they were just there to have fun β€” and it showed

A Rocky Start (And Then They Found Their Groove)

The Williams sisters looked a little rusty in the first set β€” understandable when you haven't played together in literal YEARS β€” dropping it 2-6 to their opponents.

But then? They absolutely dominated the second set 6-1, reminding everyone exactly why they've won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together.

The match came down to a 10-point tie-break, and here's where it got WILD.

And Then It Got Dramatic

Kostyuk and Stearns raced to a commanding 6-0 lead in the tie-break, and it looked like it was all over.

But the Williams sisters had other ideas. They clawed their way back to 8-7, with Kostyuk serving back-to-back double faults as the pressure mounted and the crowd went absolutely bananas.

Then the match ended in the most anticlimactic way possible: Venus double-faulted on match point. But you know what? Nobody seemed to care about the final score.

"I Didn't Come Here To Win This Tournament"

After the match, Serena kept it beautifully real in her post-match interview.

"I thought it was fun," she told reporters, per Sky Sports. "I thought it was special. We kicked off a little rust in the middle of the match and just, you know [were] starting to feel it."

"I didn't come out here to win this tournament. Winning is obviously great. But in this position just, you know, having fun. It was really cool to be able to do this again."

Yes, really. Serena Williams β€” one of the most competitive athletes in history β€” just said the quiet part out loud: sometimes it's not about the trophy, it's about playing with your sister. πŸ₯Ί

Venus echoed the sentiment: "Eventually we would find our way to each other. It's our first time playing together in forever. It was great for us to get out there and do it."

The Backstory

The Williams sisters were originally supposed to reunite at Wimbledon earlier this summer, but had to withdraw due to Serena's injury.

This Cincinnati match was only Serena's fourth appearance β€” singles OR doubles β€” since returning to the WTA Tour this summer at age 44. The woman is literally playing tennis for the love of the game at this point, and we are here for every second of it.

Meanwhile, their opponents Kostyuk and Stearns were playing their first tournament together and couldn't believe the show they'd just been part of.

"The crowd got the show," Kostyuk said. "They probably couldn't ask for anything better. At the end a tie-break is a lottery. You never know which way it's going to go."

What's Next?

Who knows if we'll see the Williams sisters team up again before the end of the season β€” or ever, honestly. But if this really was one of their final matches together, what a beautiful way to go out: fighting back from the brink, making the crowd roar, and reminding everyone why they're icons.

The US Open starts August 30, and while neither sister has confirmed whether they'll play singles or doubles there, the tennis world will definitely be watching.
