Grab a snack, because Cristiano Ronaldo has just posted an essay. A nearly 2,000-word, 11-slide Instagram essay, to be exact. And the headline? He wants to be punished, he's not retiring, and he says his coach broke his word. Twice.

According to Sky Sports, the statement went out to his 679 million followers. That's a lot of people to air your grievances to.

How We Got Here

Quick recap. Ronaldo, 41, left Portugal's Nations League camp last week after being an unused substitute against Norway and then finding out he wouldn't start against Denmark, BBC Sport reports.

Cue rumours of a rift with head coach Jorge Jesus. Jesus said there was no beef and the door was still open. Ronaldo has now given his side, and it is LONG.

The Allegations

Ronaldo says the plan was for him to sit out both the Norway and Denmark games to manage his fitness. Then, on matchday, Jesus allegedly told him he'd play 30 minutes.

His words, per BBC Sport: "I warmed up from half-time onwards, watched the minutes tick by and wasn't called on. The manager had broken his word to me."

It gets more detailed:

  • A later meeting reportedly produced an eight-point document for Jesus to present at his press conference.
  • It said Ronaldo never demanded playing time and that making "someone of the stature of Pele or Maradona" warm up without playing him was a mistake.
  • Ronaldo says it didn't require an apology, but that Jesus's public comments didn't match their private chat. He cited an "aggressiveness" and a "high and mighty" attitude he felt he didn't deserve.

That was the "second time" Jesus broke his word, Ronaldo says, so he left camp "without waiting for any further broken promises."

The Plot Twist: He Wants A Punishment

Here's the part nobody had on their bingo card. Ronaldo says he was still wrong to leave.

"The Portuguese Football Federation must assess the consequences of my actions and punish me for them. I believe the punishment should not be reduced," he wrote. He also apologised to teammates and the Portuguese people, and for not applauding the travelling fans after the Norway game.

So it's less "I'm right, he's wrong" and more "he's wrong, but I'm also wrong, and please sanction me." Honestly? A very specific flavour of drama.

So Is He Retiring?

No. Ronaldo says that after any suspension he'll be "available, as I always have been." He also revealed he'd written a retirement letter to fans after Portugal's last-16 World Cup exit this summer, but FPF president Pedro Proenca talked him out of it on the flight home.

Portugal won both games without him, and Portuguese opinion is reportedly split between Jesus supporters and Ronaldo loyalists. Portugal's next games are in November against Denmark and Wales. BBC Sport has approached the FPF for comment.

The Timing, Though

Sky notes the statement landed hours before Lionel Messi's emotional farewell game for Argentina. We're not saying it's deliberate. We're just saying the internet will say it.

The Tea ☕

  • Ronaldo says he's NOT retiring from Portugal and will be available after any suspension.
  • He accuses Jorge Jesus of breaking his word twice, but says leaving camp was his responsibility alone.
  • He's asked the FPF to punish him without leniency. The FPF hasn't responded yet.

So what's your verdict: is Ronaldo owning his mistake like a captain, or is this a very public way of making his point? Team Ronaldo or Team Jesus? Sound off below.
