Race Across The World Star Jo Gardiner Dies At 61, One Year After Losing Her Son Sam
The beloved BBC contestant who captured hearts travelling across South America with her son has died following a battle with cancer — just one year after Sam was killed in a car crash.
The Race Across The World family is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved contestants. Jo Gardiner, 61, has died following what her family described as "a long and courageous battle with cancer."
The news comes just over a year after the Manchester physiotherapist lost her son Sam, who died in a car crash in June 2025.
A Mother-Son Adventure
Gardiner appeared in the second series of the BBC One show in 2020, travelling across South America with Sam from Mexico City to Ushuaia in Argentina. She wanted to experience a travel adventure with her son, who had ADHD, according to the BBC.
The pair competed against four other teams in the popular reality series, which challenges contestants to race across continents without smartphones or credit cards.
'One Of A Kind'
In a statement, Gardiner's family — including her surviving son Charlie — said she was "one of a kind" who "lived fully, fiercely and never did anything by halves."
"She had a rare gift for making everyone around her feel more alive," they said. "She was blessed with countless friends, drawn to her extraordinary magnetism. Somehow, each one felt as though they were among her very best."
The family described her as "our joy, our safe place and our absolute treasure," adding that they take comfort knowing "her laughter, her courage, her kindness and her wonderfully outrageous spirit will live on in the many people whose lives she touched."
A Lasting Legacy
Race Across The World producers paid tribute to Gardiner, calling her "the matriarch of the Race Across The World cast family."
A spokesperson for Studio Lambert and the BBC said: "She leaves a lasting legacy in the many lives that she touched, both through the series and beyond. It was a privilege to share her story and she will be deeply missed."
Living Life To The Full
While asking for privacy as they grieve, Gardiner's family urged everyone who knew and loved her "to do exactly what she would have wanted: tell the funny stories, raise a glass, have an adventure, laugh loudly and live life to the full."
"There will never be another her," they said.
Sam Gardiner died in June 2025 when his car came off the road and crashed. His mother's death comes just 14 months later, leaving behind son Charlie and countless friends whose lives she touched.
The family's tribute captures the spirit of a woman who clearly made every moment count — both on screen and off.
