Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Are Moving Back To The U.K. After 6 Years In California β And No One Saw This Coming π
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are heading back to Britain with Archie and Lilibet at the end of the month for "an extended period" β and King Charles is reportedly the reason why.
Stop EVERYTHING. In a plot twist literally no one saw coming, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are packing up and moving back to the U.K. with their kids β yes, really.
After six years of California sunshine and Netflix deals, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are returning to Britain at the end of the month for what sources are calling "an extended period," according to Page Six. And the reason? King Charles.
The Tea β
- Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, are moving back to the UK at the end of August with Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5
- The kids will be enrolled in school in Britain, and King Charles was told about the decision on Sunday
- They're keeping their $14.5 million Montecito home but moving into "a non-royal residence" in the UK
- The move is to be closer to Charles (who's battling cancer) and to help their kids build relationships with family
- BUT they're staying non-working royals β no half-in, half-out option
"Charles Is The Reason"
"I know that Charles is a big reason for their return," a royal insider told Page Six. And honestly? Given everything that's happened, this is huge.
King Charles, 77, is living with cancer and announced in December that he'd be transitioning to a precautionary phase of treatment. When Harry spoke to the BBC last May about his fractured relationship with his father, he admitted, "I don't know how much longer my father has."
The palace was made aware of the move on Sunday, sources confirmed, and while Charles "looks forward" to spending more time with Harry and Meghan in a personal capacity, he's made it crystal clear: their status as "non-working members" of the royal family will NOT change.
The Reconciliation We Didn't Know We Needed
It's not just about Charles, though. According to sources, Harry and Meghan want their children to forge relationships with cousins and other family members. "They have so many friends and family in the UK whom they remain so close to," a source told Page Six.
Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet will be enrolled in school in the UK β a massive change for the two California kids who've barely spent time in Britain. (Lilibet was born in California and has only visited the UK a handful of times.)
The family is particularly close to Harry's cousin Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank, who just welcomed baby daughter Adelaide earlier this month. Eugenie and Jack split their time between the UK and Portugal, where Harry and Meghan also have a vacation home.
But William Still Isn't Talking To Harry
Here's where it gets messy. While Harry and Meghan are moving closer to Charles, the frost between Harry and Prince William remains VERY real. Sources told Page Six that the heir to the throne still refuses to talk to his younger brother, and it's "unlikely" that Archie and Lilibet will be seeing their cousins Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis anytime soon. Ouch.
When the Sussexes reunited with King Charles in July during a UK visit β the first time Charles had seen his grandchildren in FOUR YEARS β there was "no contact" with William and Kate Middleton, according to Variety. The relationship between the brothers is described as "so broken."
Remember When Harry Said He'd NEVER Move Back?
This is what makes the news so shocking. Just last year, Harry told the BBC, "I can't see a world in which I would bring my wife and children back to the UK at this point." He was devastated after a court denied his appeal for publicly-funded security for his family, calling it a "duty of care that has been completely thrown out the window."
Security remains a massive concern β it's unclear what provisions are being put in place for the family's safety now that they're returning. Harry is currently waiting for a review of his security by Government committee Ravec.
Meghan, for her part, has only been back to the UK three times since "Megxit" in 2020. The kids have barely been there at all.
What About The Hollywood Dreams?
The move comes at an interesting time for the couple's Hollywood ventures. Their Archewell Productions banner has struggled to deliver on its promise of creating films and series for all ages, and their relationship with Netflix has been strained after six years of low productivity. "The mood in the building is 'We're done,'" one Netflix insider told Variety earlier this year.
But sources close to the couple insist they have "no imminent plans to relocate or disband" Archewell Productions or Meghan's As Ever lifestyle brand. They'll be keeping their Montecito mansion and apparently trying to make the transatlantic thing work.
The Full-Circle Moment
It's been six years since Harry and Meghan shocked the world with "Megxit," announcing in January 2020 that they were stepping back as "senior" members of the royal family. "After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year," they said at the time, promising to "balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America."
They moved to California, sat down with Oprah for that bombshell tell-all interview where Meghan discussed feeling suicidal and claimed members of the royal family had concerns about "how dark" Archie's skin might be. Harry later published his explosive memoir "Spare," accusing William of physically attacking him and alleging Charles called him a "spare" when he was born.
And now? They're going back. With their kids. For an extended period. We are NOT okay.
