Newcastle's sporting director didn't hold back when explaining what went down behind the scenes.

"What we had to weigh up was, very respectfully from Bruno with his behaviour towards us, very emotionally as well, he effectively told us he wanted to leave and move on," Wilson told the BBC.

"That doesn't mean he can go, but it certainly plays a part in what our thinking is when we hit a certain range of number."

Ouch. Wilson made it crystal clear this wasn't part of Newcastle's summer plan — but when your captain is that desperate to leave, what can you do?

The Tearful Goodbye

Here's where it gets REALLY emotional: Guimaraes reportedly bid a tearful farewell to his teammates and staff before leaving Newcastle's pre-season training camp in Spain.

The Brazilian joined Newcastle from Lyon back in 2022 and quickly became the club's talisman. Losing him — especially after already saying goodbye to Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon earlier this window, plus Alexander Isak last summer — is a massive blow.

Wilson admitted it was "disappointing" to see him go, but stressed that Arsenal had to meet Newcastle's valuation. And they did.

Arsenal Are Getting A "Very Special Player"

Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson acknowledged that while the club would have liked "an even higher number" for such an influential figure, £75m satisfies them.

"Is it a good deal for Newcastle United? I believe it is, but Arsenal are getting a very special player and person," Hopkinson said.

He also pointed out it's the highest fee for a player in that position at that age — so there's that.

What's Next For Newcastle?

The Magpies are now scrambling to find a replacement. They've signed five players this summer, but four of them are aged 20 and under. Wilson says they're looking for a midfielder with "a little more experience" and want to make a couple more signings before the window slams shut on September 1.

But he warned they don't want to make "any mistakes by jumping to do something that we don't really want to do to tick a box."

Translation: no panic buys. (Yet.)
