My Chemical Romance Just Hit No. 1 For The FIRST Time Ever — With An Album From 2006 That Beat Olivia Rodrigo
My Chemical Romance's 'The Black Parade' leapt from No. 139 to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, 20 years after release, the longest wait ever for an album to reach the top. Here's the tea, the numbers and the Olivia Rodrigo twist.
Emo kids, assemble, because My Chemical Romance finally has a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 — and it only took them 22 years since their chart debut. Yes, really.
Their 2006 rock opera The Black Parade just rocketed to the top of the chart, and the stats are unhinged.
The Tea ☕
- The Black Parade jumped from No. 139 to No. 1, per Billboard, after a 20th anniversary deluxe reissue.
- It earned 78,000 equivalent album units, and it's officially the longest wait ever for an album to reach No. 1.
- It knocked Olivia Rodrigo down to No. 2.
A 20-Year Wait, Officially A Record
Back in 2006, The Black Parade debuted and peaked at No. 2. It stayed the band's highest-charting album... until this week, according to Billboard.
Now it has finally finished the job. Variety reports the 20-year wait beats the previous record, set by Toby Keith's 35 Biggest Hits, which took nearly 16 years to hit No. 1 following his death in 2024. It's also the first anniversary album ever to debut at No. 1, per Variety.
Twenty. Years. Of waiting. We are NOT okay.
The Numbers Are Wild
Here's where it gets fun. Of those 78,000 units, 68,000 were pure album sales (up a staggering 2,082%), according to Billboard. Vinyl alone accounted for 42,000, the band's best vinyl week ever.
How? The reissue came in more than 20 physical variants across vinyl, CD and cassette, including signed editions. Fans clearly did what fans do: collected them all.
Billboard also notes the 139-to-1 leap is the biggest jump to No. 1 since Taylor Swift's Fearless (Taylor's Version) went 157-1 in 2021. That's some company.
The Olivia Rodrigo Plot Twist
The race was TIGHT. Rolling Stone reports that midweek predictions showed the band winning by roughly a thousand sales.
Olivia Rodrigo's You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love slid to No. 2 with 64,000 units. And the pop star was reportedly gracious about it: per Rolling Stone, she cheered the band on with a string of pink hearts on her Instagram story, sharing a clip from their Citi Field show, which she attended earlier this year.
Honestly? Supportive queen behavior.
The Rest Of The Top 10
Rounding out the chart, per Billboard and Variety:
- No. 3: Morgan Wallen, I'm the Problem
- No. 4: Ella Langley, Dandelion
- No. 5: Noah Kahan, The Great Divide
- No. 6: Taylor Swift, The Life of a Showgirl
Zach Bryan, Noah Kahan's Stick Season, Drake and Olivia Dean fill out the rest.
It's Not Over Yet
The band has been celebrating the album on tour since July 2025, including a five-night run at the Hollywood Bowl this October, with the trek slated to wrap on Nov. 22 in Indonesia, per Billboard. They also reportedly scored their first-ever No. 1 on the UK albums chart on Friday, according to Rolling Stone.
Not bad for a band that just marched its way into history. 🖤
