Stop scrolling and go rewatch your DVR, because two very famous faces were strolling across a street in the Gilded Age Season 4 premiere and you may have blinked right past them.

Yes, really: Matt Damon and David Letterman. Top hats. Zero lines. Maximum chaos.

Where To Look

According to Deadline, the pair appears at about the 8:33 mark of the episode, crossing the street together like two serious businessmen on their way to close a deal.

Damon is in a top hat, white shirt with an ascot and a long coat, and he's rocking sideburns and a fuzzy mustache. Letterman has the beard he's been wearing for years now, plus a bowler hat and an all-black look.

Neither says a single word. Deadline calls it comical that they could have played bigger roles, but says it's "perfect" that they simply exist in this world without taking focus from the story.

We're calling it: the most expensive background extras in TV history. (That's a joke, we have no idea what they were paid.)

Meanwhile, The Actual Plot Went OFF

The cameos were a fun little treat, but per Deadline's recap, the premiere (which, warning, we're about to spoil) packed in some big moments too:

  • Marian and Larry hooked up. After a racy after-hours party following Oscar van Rhijn and Enid Turner's wedding, Marian and her ex-fiancé Larry Russell get caught in the rain, take cover at a hotel, and become lovers. By morning, Marian is panicking about her reputation.
  • Gladys nearly died in childbirth. She and her baby boy are healing, but the doctor had to perform a hysterectomy to save her life, so she can't have more children naturally.
  • Agnes learned a secret. Her new daughter-in-law Enid used to be Bertha Russell's lady's maid, and Agnes is NOT thrilled nobody told her before the wedding.

Enid, though, handled it like a pro, gently letting Agnes know she and Oscar entered the marriage with their eyes wide open and that his sexuality is no secret.

The Setup, In Case You're Catching Up

Per Page Six, Season 4 picks up with George and Bertha Russell separated after an assassination attempt on George and Bertha's role in pushing Gladys into her marriage to the Duke of Buckingham.

The season has eight episodes, airing Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and streaming on HBO Max. Episode 2 lands Nov. 8. Page Six also points to Decider's review calling the season a mix of "high class craftsmanship and old school camp."

The Tea ☕

  • Matt Damon and David Letterman make silent cameos around the 8:33 mark of the Season 4 premiere.
  • Marian and Larry spend the night together, and Marian is not okay about it.
  • Gladys survives a scary birth, and Agnes finds out about Enid's past.

So here's what we need to know: did you catch Damon and Letterman live, or did you only find out now? And whose cameo would you want to see next season? Tell us in the comments.
