The pair sat down with BBC News ahead of a massive concert in Milton Keynes on Friday to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Score, and let's just say the vibes were VERY different from the tension we've seen in the past.

When asked about a new album, Wyclef literally broke into song.

"Will there be music in the future?" he asked, then immediately answered: "Absolutely." Then he started singing — yes, really — "I'm back with my bandmate!" before adding, "We're in an amazing place. I think the energy is very important."

Lauryn didn't hold back either, revealing that the band has been through "an incredible healing process."

"There was an incredible healing process that happened with us as a band and as bandmates," she told the BBC. "We just want to showcase that and give some of that energy to the world as well."

The Fugees haven't released a studio album since The Score dropped in 1996 — the iconic record that gave us "Ready or Not," "Fu-Gee-La," and that unforgettable cover of "Killing Me Softly." It was one of the defining albums of a generation, and fans have been waiting nearly three decades for a follow-up.

But Wait, There's a Complication

Here's the thing: the group's third member, Pras Michel, is currently serving a prison sentence in the United States following his conviction in a federal lobbying and fraud case. According to the BBC, he was sentenced to 14 years in November 2025.

So while Lauryn and Wyclef are vibing and healing, the full trio reunion remains... complicated.

Neither artist confirmed that a new album is currently being recorded, but the fact that they're even talking about it — and singing about it, in Wyclef's case — is a huge shift from years of reported tension.

They're Still a Movement

Wyclef reflected on what the Fugees meant back in 1996, and what they still mean today.

"I remember saying from a very young age, we're not going to do music, we're going to be a movement," he said. "When you talk about the idea of refugees, look where we are today. We were saying these things 30 years ago."

Lauryn added that the Fugees embodied the concept behind their upcoming Diaspora Calling! festival: "Our different places of origin came together to unite culture, reflect culture and show people how beautiful, powerful and resourceful that culture is."

Earlier this week, the pair surprised fans with a pop-up performance in London's Piccadilly Circus, performing an a cappella version of "Ready or Not." Because of course they did.

Advice for the Kids

The duo also had words of wisdom for young artists trying to make it in the TikTok era.

Wyclef said today's musicians are pushing back against the pressure to go viral: "The kids are saying, 'I don't want to be on TikTok like that. I don't want to be on Instagram. I'm not trying to go viral. I just need people to listen to my music and engage with my music.'"

Lauryn's advice? Patience.

"Art is not gone yet," she said. "Patience is a virtue. You want it in 30 seconds, but it isn't going to happen in 30 seconds. If you keep coming together with a positive plan and saying, 'We want to be heard,' then you'll be heard."

She finished with this: "Respect your audience, respect yourself."

The Diaspora Calling! festival hits the Milton Keynes National Bowl on Friday, featuring performances from Lauryn, Wyclef, Erykah Badu, Giggs, Fireboy DML, YG Marley, and Zion Marley, with Dave Chappelle hosting. It's going to be MASSIVE.
