Stop scrolling, because this is the team-up we didn't know we needed. Jennifer Lawrence is officially starring in Zach Cregger's next movie, a mysterious original sci-fi thriller called The Flood β€” and yes, that's the same Cregger who gave us Weapons.

The Tea β˜•

  • J.Law is starring in The Flood, a sci-fi thriller Cregger is writing, directing and producing from his own original idea, per Deadline.
  • It lands in theaters August 11, 2028 via Warner Bros.' New Line Cinema.
  • Plot details? Locked in a vault. Nobody's talking.

Why Everyone's Screaming

Cregger is having a MOMENT. According to Variety, Weapons pulled in $270 million worldwide on a budget of under $40 million, and Amy Madigan won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for playing the terrifying Aunt Gladys. (Iconic. We still can't look at a classroom the same way.)

Now his Resident Evil movie is out and, per Deadline, it has already crossed the $200 million mark globally after a $60 million U.S. opening, the best ever for both Cregger and the franchise. Add an Oscar winner to that run and, well, the momentum is real.

A "Coup" For The Studio

The Hollywood Reporter calls Lawrence's casting "a coup β€” for any studio, really," noting she's known for being quite choosy about her projects. So the fact that she picked this one tells us something.

THR also reports that New Line picked the project up out of turnaround from Netflix earlier this year, with production due to start in Europe in the first months of 2027. Amblin Entertainment is producing alongside Cregger's regular collaborators Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment.

Warner Bros. chiefs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy called her "one of the most gifted and compelling actors working today." Cregger himself said, "Jennifer is one of a kind, and I'm beyond excited to see her in this role."

What Else Is On J.Law's Plate?

She's been busy. Lawrence earned a Golden Globe nomination for Die My Love, and she's next set to appear in Martin Scorsese's What Happens at Night opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, which her production company Excellent Cadaver is producing. Variety also notes she's part of the upcoming Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping. That is one stacked calendar.

The Internet Will Have THOUGHTS

Here's the fun part: we know basically nothing. No plot, no co-stars, no trailer. Fan theories are sure to start flying, but for now we're just working with a title, a release date and some very big names. A flood, a sci-fi setting, a Cregger movie... we're already spiraling. (Purely speculation, obviously.)

Two years is a LONG time to wait, but if the Weapons hype taught us anything, it's that going in blind is half the fun.

So tell us: what do you think The Flood is actually about, and is Jennifer Lawrence the perfect fit for a Cregger movie? Drop your wildest theories below.
