Hilary Duff Just Brought Her Ex Joel Madden On Stage At MSG — And Their Spouses Were ALL FOR IT
The "So Yesterday" singer reunited with her early-2000s boyfriend for a surprise performance of "The Anthem" — and yes, everyone's partners were backstage cheering them on. THIS is what we call mature.
Stop everything, because Hilary Duff just gave Madison Square Garden the surprise performance nobody saw coming — and honestly? The wholesome energy is UNMATCHED. 🎤
The "So Yesterday" singer brought her ex-boyfriend Joel Madden and his band Good Charlotte on stage Wednesday night during her sold-out "The Lucky Me" World Tour stop in NYC. And before you start spiraling, both of their spouses were literally backstage cheering them on. Yes, really.
The Setup Was Chef's Kiss
Midway through the show, Duff changed into a Good Charlotte T-shirt — which, in retrospect, was a MASSIVE hint — before teasing the crowd.
"New York, you know I would never come here and not have a surprise for you," she told the screaming audience, according to Page Six.
Then she dropped the bomb: "I brought two of my dearest friends to New York City tonight. Talk about some day oners."
Out walked Joel Madden, 47, and his twin brother Benji to perform Good Charlotte's 2002 anthem "The Anthem" while the entire arena lost its collective mind. The nostalgia? OVERWHELMING.
The Tea ☕
- Hilary Duff, 38, and Joel Madden dated from 2004 to 2006 — she was 16, he was 25 (yes, we're side-eyeing that age gap in hindsight)
- Twenty years later, they reunited on stage at Madison Square Garden to perform "The Anthem"
- Their current spouses were ALL there: Duff's husband Matthew Koma and Joel's wife Nicole Richie posed together backstage like the world's most chill double date
- Duff's three kids were in attendance, and she even gave her 5-year-old daughter Mae a shoutout — despite the fact that Mae had been in the ER for stitches that very morning, Page Six reports
The Backstage Photo Is Everything
The real proof that everyone is cool? The backstage group photo.
Duff stood next to her husband Matthew Koma (they married in 2019), while Joel posed with his wife Nicole Richie (married since 2010). Benji Madden was also there — though his wife Cameron Diaz wasn't pictured.
"Family night @MSG," Benji captioned the Instagram snap, and honestly, that's the vibe. This is what mature, healthy friendships with your exes look like, people.
They've Been Friendly For YEARS
This isn't even the first time the couples have hung out together. Page Six notes that Duff, Koma, Joel, and Richie all stepped out for a group dinner at Scratch Bar & Kitchen in Los Angeles back in 2022.
Duff has been open about the relationship in the past, too. During a 2016 episode of "The Love Bomb" podcast, she called her romance with Joel "so all-encompassing" and "so intense."
But clearly, two decades and two marriages later, they've figured out how to stay friends — and we are HERE for this level of emotional maturity.
And Then It Got EVEN Sweeter
Did we mention Duff's daughter Mae was in the ER getting stitches the morning of the show? Because she was. And Duff still went on to deliver a sold-out MSG performance and reunite with her ex on stage while her kids watched from backstage.
Icon behavior, honestly.
The "Lizzie McGuire" alum gave her three kids — Banks, 7, Mae, 5, and Townes, 2, plus her 14-year-old son Luca from a previous marriage — a shoutout during her speech. Talk about a full-circle moment.
The Verdict
Look, we've seen a LOT of awkward celebrity ex reunions over the years. But this? This is the blueprint. Hilary Duff and Joel Madden proving that you can have history with someone, move on, build beautiful families, and STILL show up for each other two decades later.
The matching spouses backstage. The nostalgic 2002 banger. The Madison Square Garden crowd losing it. Chef's kiss all around. 👏
