Hibs Just Beat Hearts At Hampden For The FIRST TIME EVER — And Rangers Are Waiting In The Final
Hibs beat Hearts 2-1 in the Scottish League Cup semi-final, their first ever Hampden win over their Edinburgh rivals, with Marink Reedijk picking up his first win as boss. Here's the tea.
Edinburgh bragging rights have officially changed hands, and the Hibs end of the city is LOUD tonight.
Hibernian beat Hearts 2-1 in the Scottish League Cup semi-final at Hampden, and according to Sky Sports, it's the first time Hibs have EVER beaten their city rivals at the national stadium. Yes, ever.
The Tea ☕
- Hibs came from behind to win 2-1 in a "frenetic" Edinburgh derby
- It was new boss Marink Reedijk's first win in charge
- Rangers await in the final on December 13
A Wild Start
Hearts struck first. Sky Sports reports Claudio Braga headed in from a corner in the fourth minute, and the maroon half of Hampden must have thought they were off and running.
They were not.
Returning Hibs striker Martin Boyle levelled in the 19th minute with what Sky describes as a poacher's goal, and the Hibees never really looked back.
McGrath Makes It Count
Three minutes before the break, midfielder Jamie McGrath put Hibs ahead. That's the goal that turned out to be the winner.
Hearts still carried a threat after the interval, per Sky's report, but a stout defensive display from the Leith side held firm. Cue the full-time scenes.
Why This One Hurts (If You're Maroon)
Here's the part that makes it historic. Hearts had won all four previous Hampden meetings between the sides, in 2006, 2012, 2020 and 2022, according to Sky Sports.
Four from four. Bragging rights banked. And then Sunday happened.
The semi-final was also billed in the build-up as an "all or nothing" derby, as BBC Sport's League Cup coverage shows, so the stakes were sky-high before a ball was kicked.
Reedijk Gets His First Win
Imagine picking up your first win as a manager in a cup semi-final derby against your biggest rivals. That's a very good way to win over a fanbase, and Reedijk has done exactly that.
Next Up: Rangers
Hibs now meet Rangers in the final at Hampden on December 13. Rangers booked their place on Saturday, and per BBC Sport's coverage, a Naderi goal sent them past Aberdeen.
That gives Hibs about six weeks to enjoy this one before the real test arrives.
So, over to you: is this the start of something big for Hibs under Reedijk, or just one glorious derby day? And can they stop Rangers on December 13? Sound off below.
