England Just Put SEVEN Past Croatia In Rijeka — And The Group Chat Has Not Recovered
England thrashed Croatia 7-0 in Rijeka, with Kane and Saka bagging two each. Here's the madness, the standout performers and the one stat line that has fans screaming.
Stop scrolling, because England just went to Croatia and put SEVEN past them. Yes, really. Seven. In Rijeka. With Luka Modric on the other side.
According to Sky Sports, it was a performance "that will live long in the memory", and honestly? We get it.
The Tea ☕
- England beat Croatia 7-0 in their Nations League Group A3 tie, which Sky says is Croatia's biggest ever defeat.
- Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka bagged two apiece, with Jude Bellingham, Anthony Gordon and Morgan Rogers also on the scoresheet.
- Only 100 England fans were allowed in the stadium, so they basically witnessed history from a very exclusive box seat.
Seven Goals, Zero Mercy
Kane got things going early, firing into the roof of the net after a lovely Bellingham pass, per Sky. Bellingham then got his own, Gordon nodded in a third, and Saka made it four right before the break.
Four before half-time. Slaven Bilic looked shocked, according to Sky's report, and we cannot blame him.
After the restart, Kane added a fifth after latching onto an Elliot Anderson cross, Saka grabbed his second, and substitute Rogers rounded the keeper to cap it off late on.
The Quansah Plot Twist
Remember the pre-match chatter? There was reportedly some disquiet that Jarell Quansah was picked at right-back ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who stayed on the bench all night.
Well. Quansah delivered the quality cross for Gordon's header and picked up an 8 in BBC Sport's player ratings. Tuchel's selection: vindicated.
The Ratings Are In
BBC Sport's Alex Howell named Bellingham the best player on the pitch, handing him a 9 for a goal, an assist and that opening pass. His verdict: "a truly world-class player."
Kane and Gordon also scored 9s. Gordon has now scored in four England games in a row and BBC says he's playing with "a huge amount of confidence." Saka got an 8 and, per the BBC, could have had a hat-trick had he not missed a big chance in the second half.
Alex Scott also made his first England start and, according to BBC Sport, looked confident throughout. Not a bad debut night for a Bournemouth midfielder.
Wait, Was It 6-0 Or 7-0?
A quick note for the sticklers: BBC Sport's RSS blurb briefly teased the scoreline as 6-0, but the full BBC article and Sky Sports both confirm 7-0. Seven it is, and we're not giving one back.
Why It Matters
Sky notes Thomas Tuchel needed a strong showing in this run of Nations League games after an opening defeat to Spain and a win over a Czech side reduced to 10 men that wasn't wholly convincing. Mission accomplished, with interest.
The run ends with a home game against the Czech Republic on Tuesday, so the pressure is now on to keep the party going.
Is this the best England performance you've ever seen, or are we all still too giddy to be trusted? And who's your player of the match: Bellingham, Kane, Gordon or Saka? Sound off below.
