EIGHT England Cricket Stars Have Been Involved In Nightclub Drama In One Year β€” And Michael Vaughan Says Someone Needs To Be Made An Example Of 😳🍺

England cricket has a drinking problem β€” and we're not talking about the score.

Brydon Carse was arrested in handcuffs outside a Derby nightclub at the weekend, becoming the EIGHTH England player to be involved in a late-night incident in just one year, according to BBC Sport.

Yes, you read that right. Eight players. Twelve months.

And now former England captain Michael Vaughan is saying what everyone's thinking: someone needs to be made an example of before this spirals even further out of control.

The Latest Mess

Let's start with the fresh drama. Carse, 31, was on a night out with Durham teammates (including England legend Ben Stokes) in Derby on Saturday when things went sideways.

Footage shared on social media showed Carse in handcuffs, surrounded by police officers β€” an absolutely AWFUL look for England cricket, which is trying to rebuild its reputation under new captain Joe Root.

Derbyshire Police confirmed a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly, but was "de-arrested shortly afterwards having agreed to leave the area."

Still, the damage was done. Carse has been dropped from England's squad for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord's while the Cricket Regulator investigates, reports BBC Sport.

"A Punishment To Send A Shiver"

And here's where it gets SERIOUS.

Michael Vaughan β€” who captained England to Ashes glory back in the day β€” went on BBC Radio 5 Live and basically said: enough is enough.

"Someone is going to have to get a punishment that sends a shiver down the whole England cricket team," Vaughan said, per BBC Sport.

"Everyone needs to know that if you misbehave or bring any kind of bad reputation on to this team, you know what's going to come. It's the only punishment that will really hurt players."

Former England spinner Phil Tufnell agreed, saying the only way to stop this is to bench someone for FIVE GAMES. "It will soon stop. It would be cleared up in a jiffy," he said.

Ouch. 😬

The Tea β˜•

Here's the full rundown of England's nightclub nightmare year:

  • Brydon Carse β€” arrested in Derby (August 2026)
  • Ben Stokes & Gus Atkinson β€” broke team curfew, present when security staff member was punched by Saracens rugby player in London nightclub (June 2026)
  • Harry Brook β€” punched by bouncer outside Wellington nightclub (October 2025)
  • Jacob Bethell & Josh Tongue β€” also present at the Brook incident
  • Ben Duckett β€” filmed apparently drunk on England's Ashes tour holiday in Noosa, Australia

That's EIGHT players under England central contracts involved in or present for late-night incidents β€” more than a quarter of the 30 men on England deals.

"Joe Root Will Be Absolutely Fuming"

This couldn't have come at a worse time for England's new (well, returning) captain.

Joe Root was just reappointed Test captain and literally ONE GAME into his second stint, he's dealing with this mess.

Before his first match back β€” an innings victory over Pakistan at Headingley β€” Root called on his players to be "good role models and good human beings," according to BBC Sport.

Welp. That aged like milk left in the sun. πŸ₯›β˜€οΈ

"Joe Root will be absolutely fuming with this," Vaughan said. "He will have been hoping to arrive at Lord's to talk about cricket and his team. Now he will have to answer all these questions about discipline, curfews and drinking culture."

Root is set to face the media on Tuesday, and honestly? We do NOT envy him.

What About Carse?

Here's the thing: Carse is actually GOOD. Like, really good.

Since his Test debut in October 2024, no England bowler has more Test wickets than his 58. He played all five Ashes matches in Australia and has been a key part of England's pace attack.

But at 31, he's not exactly a young player with time on his side. Missing games now β€” especially if he gets a lengthy ban β€” could seriously derail what's left of his international career.

Vaughan had some sympathy for Carse, calling him "a character who can be a little bit loose" and saying he needs "people around him giving him better advice."

"I would feel for Carse if he is the one who takes the rap for what has happened over the past nine months," Vaughan added. "But somewhere, somehow, something has to be done to set a precedent that they won't stand for that behaviour any more."

Translation: Carse might be the unlucky one who gets made an example of β€” even though he's far from the only offender.

The Pattern Is The Problem

Look, we're not here to shame anyone for having a night out. Athletes are human, and they're allowed to unwind.

But when more than a quarter of your squad has been involved in nightclub incidents in ONE YEAR? That's not bad luck β€” that's a culture problem.

And it's not just about the arrests or the bad headlines. It's about what this says to the next generation of cricketers coming through the system.

"Everything we thought has been brushed under the carpet and moved to one side, we are pretty much back to square one," Vaughan said.

The Cricket Regulator is investigating, and whatever punishment comes down will set the tone for how seriously England takes this issue going forward.

Will it be a slap on the wrist? Or will someone β€” maybe Carse, maybe someone else β€” get benched for a chunk of the season as a warning to the rest?

We'll find out soon. But one thing's for sure: England's drinking culture is about to face its biggest test. 🏏

The Bottom Line

England cricket has a nightclub problem, and it's getting REALLY hard to ignore.

With eight players involved in boozy drama in just 12 months, former captain Michael Vaughan is calling for a punishment severe enough to make everyone think twice.

Brydon Carse is the latest to get caught up in the chaos β€” but will he be the one to pay the price for everyone else's mistakes too?
