Stop scrolling, because Chelsea just pulled off one of the most shocking deadline-week deals of the summer — and honestly? We're still processing it.

Chelsea have agreed a £7.5m fee to sign Aston Villa's World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, according to BBC Sport. Yes, THAT Emi Martinez. The Argentina international who saved three penalties in the World Cup final shootout last year. For less than the price of a decent midfielder's left boot.

We are NOT okay.

Wait, £7.5 Million?!

The 33-year-old is set to undergo a medical in London and will strengthen Chelsea's goalkeeping options following some... let's say questionable performances from current number one Robert Sanchez.

The writing was on the wall after Monday's 3-2 win over Fulham, when Sanchez let Josh King's shot slip through his grasp at the near post, then spilled another effort into a dangerous area for Gonzalo Garcia to score. Yikes.

BBC Sport reports this represents "a remarkable turnaround in opinion at Stamford Bridge" — those in charge had been backing Sanchez but have now made a U-turn just days before the transfer deadline.

The drama! The chaos! The MESS of it all!

The Tea ☕

Here's what you need to know:

  • Chelsea agreed £7.5m for Martinez after concerns over Sanchez's form
  • Villa were willing to sell after signing Japan keeper Zion Suzuki from Parma for £30m earlier this month
  • It's the latest in a series of deals between the clubs — Chelsea signed Morgan Rogers for £117m, while Nicolas Jackson (valued at £65m) is heading to Villa to reunite with Unai Emery

Villa Are Having A FIRE SALE

Here's where it gets even wilder: Villa have basically dismantled their squad this summer.

According to BBC Sport, they've already sold defender Ezri Konsa to Arsenal (£51m), forward Morgan Rogers to Chelsea (£117m), midfielder Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, and left-back Lucas Digne back to PSG.

And they can't even guarantee Ollie Watkins will stay beyond the deadline amid interest from Saudi Arabia. WHAT IS HAPPENING AT VILLA PARK?!

Villa also just signed Leon Goretzka on a free transfer from Bayern Munich to help fill the gaps, but still. This is a LOT.

The Chelsea-Villa Pipeline Is REAL

If you're getting déjà vu, it's because Chelsea and Villa have basically become best friends this transfer window.

The clubs have a "close relationship," BBC Sport notes, and were involved in what was widely described as a "PSR swap" earlier in the window — defender Ian Maatsen joined Villa while Omari Kellyman moved to Chelsea (he's now at Strasbourg).

Striker Nicolas Jackson was even completing a medical at Villa Park on Thursday as he prepares to link up with former Villarreal boss Emery. The two clubs are practically in each other's pockets at this point.

Plot Twist: Juventus Tried First

Fun fact: Juventus actually attempted to sign Martinez earlier in the window, but the deal collapsed because of concerns over a finger injury. The Italian club ended up signing Tottenham's Guglielmo Vicario on loan instead.

Chelsea clearly weren't bothered by the injury concerns — or they're just THAT desperate for an upgrade on Sanchez. Probably both, if we're being honest.

What This Means

For Chelsea: They're getting a proven winner with elite shot-stopping ability and World Cup pedigree for absolute peanuts. Martinez won the Europa League with Villa and reached the World Cup final with Argentina last season. He's also famous for his... let's call it confident personality. The Stamford Bridge crowd is going to LOVE him.

For Villa: They've cashed in on yet another star player but at least they have a replacement lined up in Suzuki. Still, selling your World Cup-winning keeper days before the deadline? Bold strategy.

For Sanchez: Oof. This is NOT the vote of confidence you want from your club. He's been Chelsea's first-choice since 2023, but those errors against Fulham might have sealed his fate.

And Then It Got Worse

Oh, and just to add to Villa's chaos: they lost their opening Premier League fixture 4-0 at Brighton on Sunday. FOUR. NIL.

No wonder Emery is frantically wheeling and dealing before the deadline. The man is basically playing Football Manager on speed.
