Celtic Just Threw Away A FOUR-GOAL Lead In The Most Heartbreaking Champions League Collapse Ever β And We Are Not Okay πβ½
The Scottish champions were cruising with a 4-0 aggregate lead against LASK β then conceded FIVE unanswered goals to crash out of the Champions League in extra time. This is the kind of sporting disaster that will haunt dreams for YEARS.
Stop everything you're doing, because we need to talk about what just happened to Celtic β and honestly, we're still processing. π
The Scottish champions have just pulled off one of the most catastrophic collapses in Champions League history, throwing away a four-goal aggregate lead to crash out of Europe's elite competition in the most heartbreaking way imaginable.
Let's set the scene: Celtic went into their Champions League play-off second leg against Austrian side LASK with a comfortable 3-0 cushion from the first game. Easy, right? They even extended their lead to 4-0 on aggregate when captain Callum McGregor scored early on in Austria. Job done. Book the hotels for the group stage.
And then everything went catastrophically wrong.
The Collapse Nobody Saw Coming
LASK pulled one back through Moses Usor in the 32nd minute. Okay, fine β still 4-1 up on aggregate. Then Robert Ljubicic made it 2-1 just after halftime. Starting to get a bit nervy, but Celtic were STILL two goals ahead overall.
Then Samuel Adeniran scored an absolute screamer in the 58th minute to make it 3-1. According to Sky Sports, Celtic were "wobbling" but still just about holding on. They were literally MINUTES away from qualifying when disaster struck.
Florian Flecker headed home a 90th-minute equaliser to force extra time β and by then, you could feel the inevitable coming.
In the 109th minute, Adeniran struck from range AGAIN to put LASK ahead 5-4 on aggregate for the first time in the tie. Celtic had gone from 4-0 up to 5-4 down. We are NOT okay. π
The Tea β
- Celtic led 3-0 after the first leg and went 4-0 up on aggregate early in the second leg
- LASK scored FIVE unanswered goals to win 5-1 on the night (5-4 on aggregate) after extra time
- It's one of the worst collapses in Champions League history β and Celtic will now play Europa League football instead
- Manager Martin O'Neill took full responsibility: "I'm responsible for this one, without a doubt"
"We Apologise To The Fans"
The aftermath was brutal. Captain Callum McGregor didn't mince words when speaking to Amazon Prime, according to the BBC: "We got what we deserved. We were passive all night. We looked scared to go and win the game."
Ouch. He continued: "We have to suck it up. We apologise to our supporters and the club because there's no way we should lose that game."
Manager Martin O'Neill was equally frank, telling reporters: "I'm responsible for this one. Without a doubt." He added that Celtic are "a million miles from the finished article" β which feels like an understatement after THAT performance.
Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon, watching on Amazon Prime, summed it up perfectly: "It looked to me as if Celtic were exhausted. Fragile in duels. LASK battered Celtic tonight, physically and on the football side."
What It All Means
This isn't just any old defeat β the financial and sporting implications are HUGE. Celtic have now missed out on the Champions League for the second consecutive season (they lost on penalties at this stage to Kairat Almaty last year).
The Champions League group stage comes with a massive financial windfall that Celtic were counting on, and according to Sky Sports, O'Neill admitted: "The qualification for the Champions League is major, it's major in every aspect. Financially, for prestige, but we have to pick ourselves up."
Translation: They were planning to use that Champions League money to strengthen the squad in the transfer window, and now they have to rethink everything.
Celtic will instead be in the Europa League league-phase draw on Friday β which is still European football, but it's not quite the same as rubbing shoulders with the continent's elite, is it?
The Internet Had THOUGHTS
Naturally, football Twitter absolutely lost it over the collapse. Former Celtic captain Scott Brown said on BBC Radio Scotland: "It was a fantastic start, you go 1-0 up, but that seems like forever ago. LASK deserve to go through with that performance."
And he's not wrong β LASK were absolutely relentless, especially in the second half and extra time. They outran, outfought, and ultimately outplayed Celtic when it mattered most.
This is the kind of sporting disaster that becomes part of club folklore for all the wrong reasons. Celtic fans will be having nightmares about this one for YEARS.
