Carlos Alcaraz Just Announced His US Open Comeback After FOUR Months Out β And He Did It In The Most Unexpected Way πΎ
The defending champion has been MIA since April with a wrist injury, but he's back for Flushing Meadows β and the way he broke the news has everyone talking. Yes, really.
Stop everything, because Carlos Alcaraz just confirmed he's making his comeback at the US Open β and he announced it in the most chaotic, internet-breaking way possible.
The 23-year-old tennis superstar has been out of action since April after injuring his wrist at the Barcelona Open, missing the entire clay-court season, Wimbledon, and basically the whole summer. But according to BBC Sport, he's ready to defend his US Open crown starting August 30.
And how did he reveal the news? By teaming up with football transfer guru Fabrizio Romano. We are NOT making this up.
The Crossover We Didn't Know We Needed
Alcaraz and Romano posted a joint announcement on Instagram, with the tennis champ even dropping Romano's iconic "here we go!" catchphrase on X (complete with American flag and plane emojis, naturally).
Sky Sports reports the football influencer β yes, football β broke the tennis news in what might be the most unexpected sports crossover of 2026.
If you're confused, join the club. But also? It's kind of genius.
The Tea β
- Alcaraz hasn't played competitively since April 14 when he withdrew from the Barcelona Open with a right wrist injury
- He became the youngest man to win all four Grand Slams when he triumphed at the Australian Open in January (at just 23!)
- He's dropped to world No. 2 after rival Jannik Sinner dominated in his absence, winning Wimbledon and the French Open
- The US Open starts August 30 in New York β and Alcaraz is the defending champion
Four Months Is A LONG Time
The Spaniard's last competitive match was over four months ago, and wrist injuries are notoriously tricky for tennis players. According to BBC Sport, former US Open champ Dominic Thiem had his entire career derailed by a wrist problem and ended up retiring.
Alcaraz said back in April he didn't want to rush back and risk doing more damage "for future tournaments" β which, honestly? Smart.
He's been gradually returning to training over the past few weeks, hitting at his home courts in Murcia and practicing with his mate Holger Rune (who's also coming back from an Achilles injury). He even pulled out of the Cincinnati Open earlier this month to be cautious.
But now? He's ready. And he might even play mixed doubles the week before the singles event kicks off.
What He's Up Against
While Alcaraz has been out, his rival Sinner has been on an absolute tear. The Italian has lost only three matches all year and swept both Indian Wells and Miami without dropping a set.
Sinner replaced Alcaraz as world No. 1 after beating him in the Monte Carlo Masters final in April β their only meeting this year. Ouch.
The good news? Sinner is also dealing with a knee injury and withdrew from Cincinnati, so neither of them will have much hard-court match time heading into New York.
The Comeback King?
Alcaraz won his first Grand Slam at the 2022 US Open when he was just 19, then repeated the feat last year by beating Sinner in four sets. He's a seven-time major champion and completed the career Grand Slam at the start of this year.
So yeah, if anyone can come back from four months out and defend a title, it's probably him.
The big question now: Is he match-fit enough to take on Sinner and the rest of the field? Or will the layoff be too much to overcome?
