'Avengers: Endgame' Just Stole The Box Office Crown Back From 'Avatar' By A Margin Of ... $1.8 Million
Endgame has reclaimed the title of highest-grossing movie ever, edging past Avatar by about $1.8 million thanks to its Encore re-release. Here's the photo-finish and what it means for Doomsday.
Stop scrolling, because the all-time box office throne just changed hands AGAIN, and the margin is absurdly, hilariously thin.
Avengers: Endgame is officially the highest-grossing movie in history once more, according to Variety, Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter.
The Photo Finish
Per Deadline and THR, Endgame now sits at $2.9255 billion worldwide. Avatar is at $2.9237 billion.
That's a gap of roughly $1.8 million on nearly $3 BILLION. Yes, really. THR calls it "barely enough."
How We Got Here
The credit goes to the Avengers: Endgame Encore re-release, which Disney sent back to theaters to build hype for Avengers: Doomsday.
Deadline reports the second weekend brought in $4.4 million domestically, an 81% drop from its $26.1 million No. 1 opening weekend. THR adds $14.4 million came from overseas on top of that.
Variety says the re-release has pulled in more than $126 million worldwide so far. Deadline notes it's now the highest-grossing re-release across Latin America, with Mexico and Brazil leading the way.
A Very Long Game Of Hot Potato
This crown has bounced around for years:
- Avatar held the title for a decade after its 2009 release.
- Endgame snatched it in 2019.
- Avatar took it back in 2021 with a re-release ahead of The Way of Water.
- Now Endgame is back on top.
Variety points out Avatar has had five re-releases, so this fight has been going on a while.
Disney Wins Either Way
Here's the plot twist: Disney owns both. Variety notes Avatar was a 20th Century Fox release, and Disney now owns Fox. The studio is behind seven of the ten highest-grossing movies ever.
The Doomsday Factor
Avengers: Doomsday arrives Dec. 18, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, per Deadline. It's set to square off against Dune: Part Three in what Deadline calls another Barbenheimer-style weekend.
Variety says the re-release turnout has theater owners buzzing, and notes Marvel's summer hit Spider-Man: Brand New Day is at $2.5 billion and counting.
The Tea β
- Endgame: $2.9255B. Avatar: $2.9237B.
- The Encore re-release has earned over $126M worldwide.
- Doomsday hits Dec. 18, and a fight over the crown could continue.
Deadline's commenters are already predicting James Cameron will re-release Avatar to take it back. We wouldn't bet against it.
